Yoshiya (he/him) is a counselor-in-training completing his master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at SUNY New Paltz. His approach is grounded in person-centered care and the understanding that we all participate in this life and world differently. He hopes to create a space where clients can address immediate concerns as well as deeper questions about who they are and how they are experiencing the world. For Yoshiya, therapy is an opportunity to give yourself the time and space, with some help, to look at what’s going on in your life and explore what may need attention, care, or change.

He works to stay aware of the many things acting on us: our identities, relationships, responsibilities, environments, capacities, and the larger world we live in. Drawing on his experience in disability care, food systems, clinical work, and academics, alongside his own intersections of identity and culture, Yoshiya approaches each client with curiosity and respect for the particulars of their experience. He works collaboratively to make sense of where they are, rather than fitting them into a fixed way of being understood. He draws on clinical frameworks as tools for understanding, not as the final word on who someone is.

Yoshiya has experience facilitating outpatient PROS groups, working with adults navigating things such as anxiety, depression, TBI, trauma, and adjustment-related concerns, and continues to explore what it means to incorporate various modalities like DBT, CBT, and expressive arts therapy into the counseling process. In his internship, he welcomes clients of all ages.

He hopes to work alongside clients as they check in with themselves, take stock of their environment and the world around them, and figure out what a fair life looks like, for themselves and in relation to the world they’re part of.
