Izma Naim Butt
Mental Health Counseling Intern
Izma is under the clinical supervision of Timothy Crumley, LMHC, private practice
My approach to therapy is eclectic, drawing primarily from cognitive-behavioral and Gestalt frameworks with a relational and strength-based lens. I work collaboratively with clients to identify unhelpful thought patterns, challenge limiting beliefs, and develop practical coping strategies. I value the therapeutic relationship as a foundation for change and strive to create a safe, non-judgmental space grounded in trust. My style is direct, supportive, and focused on helping clients build insight, navigate life transitions, and develop emotional resilience through honest self-exploration and goal-oriented work.
Professional Interests:
Trauma-informed care, relational counseling, family systems, identity development
Group and Liaison Roles:
My clinical experience includes co-facilitating Understanding Self and Others (USO), a process-oriented counseling group at Syracuse University focused on improving relational dynamics, self-esteem, and assertiveness. I also co-led a faith-based support group in collaboration with a pastoral counselor, creating space for students to explore the intersection of spirituality and mental health. For the past year, I’ve participated in a BIPOC supervision group, which has enriched my culturally responsive and anti-oppressive practices.
Educational Background:
Currently, I am a Fulbright Scholar in my second year of Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Syracuse University. I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a minor in Psychology from the Lahore University of Management Sciences in Lahore, Pakistan. Additionally, I completed a U.K. Level 3 certification in Humanistic Counseling and Psychotherapy (CPCAB-accredited) through Therapy Works in Pakistan. My interests lie in integrating and utilizing tech to advance mental health outcomes.
DEIA Experience:
I have worked closely with students with disabilities, including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder and Down syndrome, in both academic and counseling contexts. My coursework in multicultural counseling and socio-cultural dimensions of therapy has further strengthened my ability to support diverse clients with cultural sensitivity and humility.
